Below, we explore common reasons why your furnace might be blowing cold air.

Your Thermostat Settings Might Be Incorrect

One of the simplest reasons your furnace is blowing cold air is due to incorrect thermostat settings. Many homeowners accidentally set their thermostat fan to “ON” instead of “AUTO.” When set to “ON,” the furnace blower runs continuously, even when the furnace isn’t heating. There Is a Problem With the Gas Supply

If your furnace isn’t getting enough gas, it cannot produce heat and begin blowing hot air. Your Heat Exchanger Is Cracked or Broken

The heat exchanger is one of the most important parts of your furnace. It’s responsible for safely transferring heat from the combustion process to the air that circulates through your home while keeping harmful combustion gases contained and vented out. However, over time due to age, corrosion, or overheating caused by restricted airflow, the metal can crack. When this happens, your furnace’s safety mechanisms often shut down the burners to prevent dangerous gases like carbon monoxide from entering your home’s air supply.
